Many professionals want to improve their English quickly for work, and they often believe the only way to do it is by moving to an English-speaking country.
But today, I want to talk to you about English immersion — what it really means, how to achieve it, and why you don’t need to move abroad to make real progress.
I often hear students say:
“I’d improve so much faster if I could move to England, Ireland, or the U.S.”
It’s true that living in an English-speaking country can help — especially if you work, socialise, and do everything in English.
But that’s not always the case. Many people move abroad and still don’t improve because they spend most of their time speaking their own language or working in it.

When my husband and I moved to Spain over 14 years ago, we realised this firsthand. We speak English all day — to each other, to our kids, and for work. So even though we live in Spain, we’ve always had to make a conscious effort to learn and improve our Spanish.
The point is: moving abroad doesn’t guarantee improvement. What makes the difference is daily, intentional exposure to the language — something you can absolutely do without moving abroad.

You don’t need to pack your bags to surround yourself with English. Thanks to the internet, you have everything you need right where you are.
Here are some simple but powerful ways to create English immersion at home every day:
Switch your phone, laptop, and social media settings to English.
At first it might feel uncomfortable, but you’ll naturally start learning everyday words and phrases.
Take it further: comment in English, join English-speaking groups, and connect with people who post in English. Little by little, it will become natural.
Listening is one of the most effective ways to improve your understanding, pronunciation, and vocabulary.
You can:
🎬 Watch films or series in English — start with subtitles in your language, then in English, and finally without.
🎧 Listen to podcasts, audiobooks, or even the news in English.
Even 10–15 minutes a day helps. You’ll be surprised at how much your ear improves just by having English in the background while driving, cooking, or exercising.
I used to listen to Spanish radio for 10-15 minutes twice a day going to and from work and it really made a difference to my understanding in one year, even though half the time I wasn´t actively listening.

Speaking regularly is essential for fluency. Try:
💬 Language exchanges online — one hour a week, 30 minutes each in English and your language.
👥 Conversation groups or classes — in person or online.
🎙️ Record yourself speaking or reading aloud — it may feel strange, but it works wonders for pronunciation and confidence.
In our own classes, for example, we focus 100% on speaking, always in small groups, so everyone gets to talk and practise in real situations. For more information: https://inglesconkillian.com/f/new-groups-opt-in
Read anything that interests you — articles, books, posts.
It will expand your vocabulary, help you see grammar in context, and make you feel more comfortable with written English. One app I like is Blinkist, it gives a summary of books: https://www.blinkist.com/ You could also read a book that you have already read in Spanish - my first book in Spanish was one of my favourite books in English (the Alchemist by Paolo Coelho).
Apps like Duolingo or other learning platforms are a great way to practise daily.
We also offer an online platform with courses divided by level that all our students have free access to: https://inglesconkillian.com/courses/fast-track-to-fluency
The secret to immersion is consistency.
Choose activities that fit naturally into your life — for example:
• Listen to podcasts at the gym.
• Watch a cooking video in English.
• Take an online fitness or yoga class in English.
When English becomes part of what you already do, you’ll improve faster — without feeling like it’s extra work.
Immersion isn’t about where you live — it’s about what you do every day.
The more you surround yourself with English, the faster you’ll progress.
So start small, stay consistent, and you’ll see your English level grow naturally — wherever you are.
