Why improving your English feels overwhelming (and how to fix it)

Many students feel the same way when they try to improve their English: they want to progress quickly, but they end up feeling stuck.

At the beginning, it often feels frustrating and even overwhelming.

You look at everything you “need” to learn—grammar, vocabulary, listening, speaking, pronunciation—and it can feel like too much.

This is especially common for beginners. You might think: “I should study for hours every day if I want to improve.”

But this idea often has the opposite effect.

Instead of motivating you, it blocks you. You don’t know where to start, so in the end… you don’t start at all.

The truth is simple: English is not a sprint. It is a long game.

And like any long-term process—getting fit, losing weight, or saving money—it only works with patience, consistency, and small daily actions.

The real problem: doing too much too soon

One of the biggest mistakes students make is trying to do everything at once:

  • Study grammar

  • Learn vocabulary lists

  • Watch series in English

  • Listen to podcasts

  • Do exercises

  • Speak more

  • Write more

It sounds productive, but it quickly becomes overwhelming.

The brain doesn’t know what to prioritise, motivation drops, and consistency disappears.

The key is not doing more all at once.

The key is doing it (almost) every day.

The solution: little, often

The most effective method is simple:

👉 Do a little, often. Be consistent.

At the beginning, you don’t need hours. You need minutes.

Start with just 5 minutes most days if that´s all you can do..

Yes, only five.

The goal is not intensity. The goal is habit.

Once the habit is built, you can increase the time you spend on your English.

Step 1: Set a clear objective and a deadline

You need direction. Ask yourself:

  • What level do I want to reach?

  • By when?

For example:

  • “I want to reach B1 in 6 months”

  • “I want to be able to understand meetings in English by September”

A clear goal + a deadline = focus.

Step 2: Choose only 1 or 2 things

You cannot do everything at once. So don’t try.

Instead, choose just one or two simple activities like:

  • Listen to an English podcast

  • Study on an online platform

  • Read in English

  • Watch a series with subtitles

Keep it simple. Rotate if you want variety, but don’t overload yourself.

Step 3: Build discipline (not motivation)

Motivation comes and goes. Discipline is what creates results.

Start with:
👉 5 minutes every day

That’s it.

Even on busy days. Even when you don’t feel like it.

Because consistency matters more than intensity.

Step 4: Track your progress

A very simple tool can change everything: a tracker.

Each day you do something in English, just tick a box.

✔ Listen to English
✔ Read something
✔ Do a short exercise

It sounds basic, but it works. It builds momentum and makes progress visible.

Here is a simple tracker which you can download:

HABIT TRACKER

How to use:

It´s simple: Print out the tracker. Why print? Research tells us that we remember better if we physically write something down.

Put the tracker somewhere you will see it every day - on your desk, on the bedside locker, on the fridge door.

Choose 1, 2 or 3 of the activities in English - no more or you will be overwhelmed! Choose the ones that will lead you to your goal faster, that fit into your lifestyle, and/or you enjoy.

E.g. you have little free time and you need to improve comprehension skills - listen to a podcast in English while exercising.

Either highlight the activities you want to do, or put a line through the activities you are not doing. Alternatively there are blank spaces at the end if you prefer to write your own.

Every day, write the number of minutes you spend on your chosen topic(s) inside the box.

If you don´t do anything one day, leave it blank.

If you begin on a day that isn´t the 1st, no problem, start the tracker at any day of the month.

The final line is completed as an example:

The important thing isn´t to do something in English every day, it is to do it enough days that it becomes a habit.

So if you miss some days, don´t worry!

Download your HABIT TRACKER.

Think of it like fitness

You don’t get fit by going to the gym once for 3 hours.

You get fit by going regularly, even if it’s just a little.

English is exactly the same.

  • Effort

  • Often

  • Over time

That’s what creates real progress.

Final message

Learning English is a process.

A long one.

A patient one.

What matters is consistency.

Remember these 3 key points:

  1. Set a clear goal and deadline

  2. Start with just 5 minutes a day if that´s all you can do

  3. Be consistent
