I get it. You are busy and you don´t have time to attend English class. In fact, you prefer not to. You also find studying boring, and it is difficult to become motivated. However, the problem is that you need to improve your English.

So what can you do to improve your English that involves minimum input, but maximum output?

I have outlined 4 ideas here (briefly, though - remembering that you don´t have much time!).

Get a pen and paper or open a spreadsheet  - it´s time to make notes:

  1. Make a plan - if we fail to plan, we plan to fail. Think about your objectives, how long it will take you to reach them, and what you can do to achieve that plan. On a spreadsheet, make a quick daily schedule. Across the top, write the days of the week. Down the side, write activity. Now, this bit is important -write down something you are going to do in English every day! Maybe you read a blog post, maybe you listen to the BBC news update in English, or maybe you do a quick exercise on a mobile app. But do something every day to create the habit. If you have no idea what to do, read on for some ideas.
  2. In your plan, add things that you do already. Then add hobbies and interests that you have - do you like watching movies or series? Watch them in English. Do you like running or another sport you do alone? Listen to English. Do you have a hobby or interest? Look for social media groups/articles/podcasts/Youtube videos etc about your interest in English. Change your language settings on all your devices to English - it might be a little difficult and frustrating at the start but you will soon become accustomed to it.

You get the idea. Incorporate as much English into your life as you possibly can - every little helps.

3. Another way to maximize your time is to choose activities in English that will help you improve several areas at once. What do I mean by that? I mean that if you, for example, listen to a podcast:

i. You are improving your pronunciation because you are listening to the proper way to say things.

ii. You are also improving your speaking believe it or not, because you're hearing how the words should be said, which gives you more confidence when you speak.

iii. Besides this, you are improving your vocabulary. You are more than likely hearing new words or reinforcing other words that you have already heard, because I don't know about you, but for me in Spanish, I need to hear a new word, maybe three, four, or five times, before I actually remember it and can reproduce it.

iiii. You are also improving your grammar structures because you are hearing how things are said in the proper way.

iv. Most obviously, you are improving your understanding and your listening skills.

Now, imagine you listen to a podcast about a topic that you are interested in, you are improving the 5 areas mentioned above, AND your knowledge of your chosen topic! How efficient is that?

4. If you still can´t think of anything to do in English, here is a list of 6 things you can choose from:

Listening: Watch your favourite series in English (with subtitles if necessary).

Reading: Search for things to read in English on google.

Listening: Listen to podcasts on Spotify.
